Your old VCR and VHS tapes are magnetic strips of data.  Unfortunately, these tapes are only going to degrade with time, as the strips lose their magnetism.  Electrical interference and even normal background radiation in the environment are gradually "eating away" at your treasured VHS movies and clips.  Fortunately, it is possible to convert those tapes into DVD format, or even to save them on a thumb-drive / flash drive that you can slip into your pocket or purse.   Not only will you preserve your memories, and stop the degradation process, but you can also drop in some sound tracks, voice overs, or other audio and a full DVD menu.
